CODES & LISTINGS

Listed, Certified and Built to Code

PFS paint and spray booths are ETL listed by Intertek for flammable and combustible applications in the USA and Canada (cETLus). Control panels are UL 508A, including hazardous-location panels. Booths are built to NFPA 33, the IBC, and the NEC. Fire protection is dry chemical (Amerex, Pyro-Chem, or Stat-X) or sprinklers. PFS builds its own air make-up units.

  • Machine envelope, including attachments, and the door opening that accepts it
  • Floor loading and how the machine is driven or lifted in
  • Coating type and whether the work is spot repair or a full repaint
  • Throughput in a season or a week
  • Airflow, filtration, and lighting at the height painters actually stand
  • Utilities and a path for exhaust

Width follows the machine and the building, not a catalog maximum. Tell us the widest machine with attachments and the bay it has to live in.

Not always. Cross-flow and some side-exhaust layouts stay on the existing slab. A downdraft pit or raised floor is only proposed when the finish and the building support it.

Access is part of the layout: platforms, the door height, and lighting. It is designed with the machine, not added as an afterthought.

Industries served

Industries served

Construction and mining

Excavators, wheel loaders, mining trucks, and other machines that need door height, width, and a floor that can take the load.

Agriculture and trailers

Agricultural machinery, trailers, and implements with odd shapes and seasonal throughput.

Cranes and fleet equipment

Long or tall machines where drive-through, large doors, and a way to work the upper surfaces matter.

  • NFPA 33 sets the fire-safety rules for spray areas: construction, ventilation, electrical classification, fire protection and housekeeping.
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.107 covers spray finishing in the workplace, including exhaust and filter maintenance.
  • The International Fire Code (or your state version, such as the California Fire Code) and the local fire marshal govern the permit and inspection.
  • Your local air district may require a permit to operate, VOC limits and record keeping.
  • EPA 40 CFR Part 63, Subpart HHHHHH (6H) applies to shops that spray coatings containing target metal HAPs (chromium, lead, manganese, nickel, cadmium). It requires an enclosed booth, filters rated at least 98% capture, HVLP or equivalent guns, painter training and notifications.

PFS booths ship with ETL-listed electrical packages, and we provide the drawings and data your permit packet needs. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so confirm with your authority having jurisdiction. See our NFPA 33 guide.

Tall machines need lighting at every level and safe access. We plan man-lifts, fixed platforms and side lighting so painters can reach the top of the machine without shadows.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT GUIDE

Planning a Heavy Equipment Paint Booth

Size, airflow and floor options for construction and mining equipment.

Heavy equipment booths are built to the machine envelope including buckets, booms and attachments. Width and height follow your largest machine and your building, and we add clearance so painters and lifts can work all sides.

cross-flow is the most economical choice for large equipment. semi-downdraft booths improve finish quality without a pit. full downdraft gives the best finish when OEM-spec quality is required.

Drive-over pit grating and floor drains let machines roll in under their own power. If a pit is not practical, raised-basement downdraft or semi-downdraft layouts avoid concrete work.

Industrial coatings on heavy equipment often need heat to cure. PFS supplies heated booths and cure ovens, and blasting systems for surface prep before paint.

Every PFS booth is built with ETL/UL listed components and engineered to NFPA 33, the NEC (Article 516) and OSHA 1910.107. Your local fire marshal and air district have the final say, so we supply drawings, airflow data and cut sheets for permitting. See our NFPA 33 compliance guide for the details.

To quote quickly, send us: machine envelope including attachments; the door opening you need; your building footprint, ceiling height and power; the coatings you spray; and how many units per day or week you finish. Photos of the space help.

Tell us your shop dimensions. We'll spec the booth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Heavy Equipment Paint Booths — Common Questions

There is no catalog maximum. PFS builds booths to the machine and the building, from wheel loaders to haul trucks and cranes.

No. Cross-flow and semi-downdraft booths need no pit. A pit or raised basement is used when you want full downdraft airflow.

Yes. We can include scissor lifts, platforms or mezzanines so painters can reach the full height safely.

Yes. Heated air make-up and bake cycles speed up cure for epoxies and urethanes, and separate cure ovens are available.

PFS booths are built with ETL/UL listed components to NFPA 33, the NEC and OSHA 1910.107. We provide drawings for your permit.

Cross-flow is the most common for heavy equipment. Side downdraft or full downdraft is used when finish quality matters more or overspray must stay away from the machine.

Yes. We build blasting systems and can lay out blast, paint and cure in sequence.
